SMS PTA Mini-Grants At Work:
A Walk Through the Roman Forum
Carolina Gengo Di Domenico with SMS students Emily Denler, Meara Ferrauiola, Christopher Hanrahan On May 23, 2011, SMS students were paid a visit by Ancient Roman aristocrat Claudia. Dressed in an ancient Roman flowing tunic, Claudia escorted SMS 6th graders back in time to an ancient Roman civilization where they toured the streets of the Roman Forum, the ancient center of commerce and social life, visited ancient palaces, flew over statues, and saw other famous Roman structures. Her presentation, with a multi-media backdrop, kicked off the Ancient Roman Civilization unit that the 6th grade would be studying. Claudia was portrayed by Westchester's own italophile, Carolina Gengo Di Domenico. Carolina has been teaching Italian for almost 20 years. At an early age, she fell in love with the Italian culture and language, but Italian was not spoken in her home. She vowed one day to learn Italian and to share it with others. Today she runs a small school called La Piazza di Carolina in Crestwood where she teaches Italian in a full-immersion environment to children of all ages and adults. Elizabeth Ferrucci, a Somers Middle School Italian teacher, worked closely with Carolina to coordinate her visit to SMS. In an effort to bring Italian culture and history into her classes, Mrs. Ferrucci's 8th grade Italian students also enjoyed Carolina's presentation.
A Walk Through the Roman Forum was generously sponsored by a Mini-Grant from the PTA. |
