SMS Mini-Grant Program
The SMS PTA Mini-Grant program provides teachers with an opportunity to apply for funding for new and innovative projects or items which are typically not covered by the School District.  Teachers are invited to submit a request if they have an idea that would enhance their students' educational experience.  The requests can benefit the students of an individual class, a particular grade level or the entire school. So far, the SMS Mini-Grant Program has funded the following Mini-Grants during the 2009-2010 school year:

  • Carolyn Shilinski, $500 - Kindle and electronic books for the classroom
  • Tricia Baldes, $500 - Documentary film-making materials for all 8th graders
  • Gerrie Paige, $500 - Updating and reprinting orienteering maps of the SIS/SMS campus for use by both schools (together with the SIS Mini-Grant Program)
In addition, outside of the Mini-Grant program, the PTA has purchased books and DVD materials in support of two curriculum initiatives this year.  First, sets of books by Naomi Shahib Nye, the celebrated poet that visited SMS on Author's Day this March, were provided by the PTA to each of the nine teams to introduce her work to the students and to promote the ideals of the TUSKER program.  Additionally, to enhance the experience of the PTA-sponsored presentation of A Midsummer's Nights Dream to 8th graders and to help reinvigorate the study of Shakespeare at the 8th grade level,  new Shakespeare texts and DVD's were provided to all the 8th grade English and reading teachers.

All are welcome to attend our next meetings which will be held on April 14, 7:30pm in the SIS Library and May 5, 7:30pm in the SIS Library.
