Several authors of books appropriate for SIS students visit the school and are available to talk with students and sign books.  Volunteers are needed the day of the event to escort authors through building, distribute signed books, and generally help out.

Birthday Party commemorates the opening of SIS and is our biggest fundraiser of the year!  Over 100 volunteers are needed to keep this party safe and successful as the evening is broken into shifts by SIS grade level.  Sub-committees may include: games, raffles, ticket sales, food, etc.

Books & Beyond is a month-long reading program sponsored by the SIS PTA that encourages students to develop a love of reading above and beyond their homework assignments. Students read (on a purely voluntary basis) through four levels of the program, each representing a certain number of minutes of reading. Students keep track of their reading time on log sheets for each level. Once a student has completed a level s/he receives a small prize (a different prize for each level), plus their name is placed on a bulletin board in the SIS hallway. Volunteers are needed to help set up and administer all aspects of the program.

Book Fair

The Book Fair is held twice a year – Fall and Spring. The Fall Fair is one of the PTA’s top three fund raisers. The Spring ˝ Price Fair is a thank you to the community, and the PTA does not make any profits. Volunteers are needed mostly during the day to act as cashiers, stock and straighten shelves; deliver books; and help students make book selections, find books, and add prices.

Boxtops for Education

Boxtops for Education are collected from students and redeemed for cash from the company. The coordinator promotes collection through flyers and contests. Boxtops for Education may be found on commonly purchased products like those made by General Mills.

Class Parent Coordinator

Recruits class parents and grade level coordinators; organizes classroom emergency contact lists for phone chain. The Class Parent Coordinator is the administrative contact in the event of an early dismissal. Class Parent volunteer forms are sent out in August.

Council Delegate

As a member of the Somers district PTA Council, the SIS PTSA is represented at monthly council meetings by the president and one council delegate.  The council delegate speaks and votes on behalf of all SIS PTSA members at council meetings, carrying PTSA concerns to the council, reporting on council activities at PTSA meetings, and writing brief council reports for the PTSA newsletter.
Cultural Affairs

This committee arranges and implements a variety of cultural arts programs and assemblies to enrich the education of our children. Volunteers are needed to help at the assemblies.

The Field Day committee provides food and beverages to each grade on their respective field day. Field Day is held on three separate days by grade in the beginning of June. The chairperson responsibilities include purchasing food and beverages for all three days; sending out requests to each grade level; coordinating volunteers for each day (approximately 15 – 20 volunteers are needed per day, but more is fine); and coordinate set-up, cooking and serving of food, and clean-up. This requires approximately 2-3 days of time before the event and 5-6 hours on the day of each event. Co-chairs will split the days accordingly.

Volunteer responsibilities include showing up on the day of the event for set-up, cooking, and serving of food and/or clean up. This requires approximately 2-5 hours the day of the event. (No younger siblings are allowed.)

Fourth Grade History Day Costumes

The fourth grade visits the Wright/Reis Homestead and Mt. Zion Church to learn about life at the turn of the century. Children are asked to dress in period costume to help make the day more fun.  Volunteers are needed to:
• Act as fourth grade contact
• Collect fabric donations if needed
• Sew skirts or aprons for girls if needed
• Collect/distribute costumes
• Wash/dry costumes after the event
Garden and Green Committee

This committee was founded at SIS in April 2008 in response to a request to renovate the SIS Schoolyard Habitat.   The Committee identifies outdoor areas at SIS that could be improved to better serve the student body.   In May 2008 the Committee held a Community Garden Day that drew volunteers to renovate the Schoolyard Habitat and build The Everlasting Garden (vegetable garden).   Community Garden Day also sought donations of time, funding and supplies from local business, with great success.   The Committee also helps with on-going garden maintenance.

Green Week

This committee was established at SIS in April 2008 in response to an Educational Committee request to increase awareness of "green" issues.  The Committee’s main objective is to support the school’s efforts to heighten that awareness.  Throughout the year the Committee works closely with faculty and families to support on-going projects and to identify new programs that will provide meaningful, hands-on and sustainable opportunities for our children.  Previous projects include; road-side clean-up; building, planting and harvesting a vegetable garden; pumpkin patch; No-Trash Day; reusable water bottle awareness campaign and Salad Day.  Projects planned, so far, for 2008/09 include: reusable water bottle awareness, Soup Day, eCycling

Hospitality

Coffee, tea, & cookies are provided at PTA meetings and programs.  Providing hospitality turns a meeting into an occasion where parents can take a break while sharing parenting concerns, acquiring valuable information or just learning more about their child’s school.
Legislation
 
The Legislation Chairperson reviews information from state and local PTA offices and reports as necessary to the Primrose PTA membership.
Membership

The Chairperson manages all membership drive and enrollment activities.  Volunteers are needed to take membership paperwork and dues at the evening meetings in September. Volunteers are also needed on occasion to process member cards and requests for membership flyers.

Memory Book

The Memory Book is the equivalent of a yearbook for SIS. It is comprised mostly of photos of the major school events mixed with candid shots. There is a section of class photos for 3rd and 4th grades, and individual shots of 5th grade students. There are photos of the staff, as well. There are various messages: teacher quotes, student memories, principal’s letter, etc. throughout the book. A great effort is made to include all major events, clubs, music, and to include all the kids.

Mother/Daughter
& Father/Son Nights

At the Mother/Daughter & Father/Son Nights, the Health teacher conducts puberty education activities for 5th graders and their parents. 

The committee provides refreshments and supplies.  Volunteers are needed to purchase refreshments and supplies for that night, arrive an hour before to set up, and stay to clean up afterward.

Parent Programs
Please consider volunteering!
This committee provides information and education to parents on subjects based on feedback from parents. Typically there are 2 keynote speakers in the Fall and Spring and other speakers throughout the year. Volunteers are needed to help with registrations, mailings, surveys, flyers, PR, and goings-on behind the scenes to put together the event. No limit to volunteers.

The SIS Red Ribbon Week Committee is responsible for decorating SIS on October 19 and supporting the SIS Health Educator with any activities that take place at the school during the week.
Reflections
Brigitte Pugliese
Reflections was developed by the National PTA and is a program that encourages children, parents, teachers, and the community to have an awareness of the arts. This program has enabled students to enjoy the benefits of having their creative talents recognized and their self esteem developed. Every year, a theme is chosen and this year's theme is "Wow!".  All grade levels (K - 12) are encouraged to participate in one of four ways: musical composition, literature (including poetry, prose, and drama), visual arts (including drawing, painting, collage, and printmaking), and photography. The work will be judged for competition, and the program culminates with national recognition and awards. And although the program has a contest format, the ultimate goal is participation!

Chairperson plans, sends out invitations, coordinates and hosts lunch for the entire SIS staff.
Tasks include:
Coordinating food and gift basket contributions

   (sending home flyers and collecting them)
Scheduling volunteers for that day
Purchasing supplies
• Set-up, serve lunch and clean up
Time commitment: tasks require time for flyer distribution and collection, approximately 2-4 days prior to event for shopping, and your sparkling personality throughout the lunch.
Volunteers that day: Volunteers will be scheduled in approximately 2 ˝ hour shifts. Please note ** children are not allowed at this event,* and SIS will dismiss at 12:15 that day.

Help is needed the day of the event to set up, replenish and break down the cafeteria.

Student Directory

The chairperson for the Directory is responsible for getting out notices inviting all families to be included in the Student Directory. Once the responses are received they must be entered into a spreadsheet, printed, proofread and copied for distribution. Committee members are needed to assist with all aspects.

This committee organizes the student picture day to ensure the day runs smoothly to help collect money and picture orders from students. Volunteers will also help with the students and photographer. Volunteers are needed on picture day from 8:30am - 2:30pm.
