SIS Books and Beyond

Reading Can Take You Around The World!

February 1-29, 2012

The annual Books & Beyond Program is almost here!! Books & Beyond is a month long reading program sponsored by the SIS PTA that encourages students to develop a love of reading above and beyond their homework assignments.  THIS IS A PURELY VOLUNTARY PROGRAM.  You can begin reading for Books & Beyond on February 1st and end on February 29th.  Our theme this year is “Reading Can Take You Around the World!” and our bulletin boards and prizes are so inspired.

How Does It Work?  There are three “levels” to the program, each representing 240 minutes of reading.  Readers can begin the program at any time during the four weeks and need to keep track of their minutes read.  Reading time does include reading assigned for homework and does include being read to by an adult. Once an SIS student has completed a level s/he will receive a small prize (a different prize for each level), plus their name will be placed on a bulletin board in the SIS hallway. Prizes are given out and names are placed on the bulletin boards as soon as possible after completion of each level.  Certificates are given to all participants at the end of the program.  Each class with 100% participation and 100% completion of all four levels will be rewarded with an ice cream sundae party.  Classroom progress will be posted in the library.

Who Can Participate?  SIS students, parents, siblings and teachers can (and are encouraged to) participate.  Note that adults and siblings will only receive a certificate at the end of the program.  Teacher participation will count towards the ice cream party.

How to Submit Reading Logs?   There are two ways to submit your reading logs– but please submit your logs using only one method:

1 – Keep track of the time spent reading on a Books & Beyond Reading Log Sheet (available in the Great Rooms or (click here) to print a form).  Once the participant has logged 240 minutes, both child and parent will sign the log which is then returned to school and placed in their class’s envelope located in their Great Room; or

2- Go Green – keep track of the time spent reading through your child’s homework reading log or on scrap paper.  Once the participant has logged 240 minutes, click on the grade appropriate link below, fill out a simplified online log sheet and submit it electronically.

4th Grade Online Reading log click here.

5th Grade Online Reading log click here.

Either procedure repeats for all levels.  All reading logs (no matter how submitted) will be returned for insufficient reading time or lack of signatures.  If this happens, simply correct the mistake, resubmit the form and continue on to the next level.

VOLUNTEERS: In the meantime, How Can You Help?  Once the program has started, we need to track each participant's progress to get them their prizes and their names on the bulletin boards.  Each volunteer is assigned a class or two (we try to give you your child's class) to check and record the log sheets and fill out shapes.  This requires the volunteer to go to SIS at least two to three times a week.  The frequency is important because the children who participate like to see their names on the bulletin board and receive their prizes as soon as possible after they complete the level. Sign up now ONLINE to volunteer!

Happy Reading!
