Book Dedication
– |
This committee is responsible for promoting and
administering,
For the Love of
Reading: A Book Dedication Program.
This program is designed to provide a wonderful and unique way to
commemorate special events, to honor children, teachers and friends,
or to memorialize a loved one.
Donations to the program are used to purchase new
books for the school library of the donor’s choice.
A bookplate is placed inside each book purchased
indicating the name of the donor and recipient and the occasion for
which it was given. A letter, printed on school stationary and
signed by the school librarian, is sent to the person or family
being honored.
This committee works closely with the Library Media Specialists, the
school newsletter editors, book vendors and the council treasurer to
ensure the success of this ongoing program.

Class Parent Committees
– Julie Gorecki, Chair |
The purpose of the Class Parent Committee
is to work with students, their faculty advisors, and
school administrators on social events, community
service projects and fundraising throughout the
students’ four years at SHS. The committee becomes more
active in the student’s junior and senior years. Some
examples of senior events the committee will provide are
a back to school barbeque, yearbook day picnic, class
trip, graduation reception and a reunion breakfast in
the fall following graduation. The committee works side
by side with the students and their advisors, listening
to their ideas so that these events build class spirit,
in addition to being fun. Parent involvement is the key
to making the committee successful, from paying the
annual class dues to volunteering time.
We
have formed these committees and are looking for
volunteers to help with the various events. Anyone
interested, please call the following committee chairs:
Class

Education Committee
– Michele
Lombardo & Darilyn
Pietrangolare, Co-Chairs |
The Somers High School PTSA Education Committee Mission:
Strengthening the connection between families and
schools is so important, according to Richard W. Riley,
the U.S. Secretary of Education, that it has become one
of America’s National Education Goals. In line with
this national effort, the Somers High School PTSA
Education Committee will encourage communication among
students, parents, teachers and administrators toward
increasing success in our educational programs to ensure
the academic, social and emotional growth of our
children. The committee will gather information and
listen to ideas from high school educators, parents and
students, within our district as well as across the
state and nation, who share the goal of forging a
cooperative relationship. It will also promote the
importance of considering all points of view, of
recognizing different interests, and of being sensitive
to the ever increasing challenges facing today’s schools
and families.

Reflections
– Laura Sweig |
Reflections was developed by the the
National PTA and is a program that encourages children,
parents, teachers, and the community to have an
awareness of the arts. This program has enabled students
to enjoy the benefits of having their creative talents
recognized and their self esteem developed. Every year,
a theme is chosen
and this year's theme is "I Wonder Why...".
All grade levels (K - 12) are encouraged
to participate in one of four ways: musical composition,
literature (including poetry, prose, and drama), visual
arts (including drawing, painting, collage, and
printmaking), and photography. The work will be judged
for competition, and the program culminates with
national recognition and awards. And although the
program has a contest format, the ultimate goal is
participation! |
