Book Dedication
–

This committee is responsible for promoting and administering, For the Love of Reading: A Book Dedication Program.  This program is designed to provide a wonderful and unique way to commemorate special events, to honor children, teachers and friends, or to memorialize a loved one.

Donations to the program are used to purchase new books for the school library of the donor’s choice.  A bookplate is placed inside each book purchased indicating the name of the donor and recipient and the occasion for which it was given. A letter, printed on school stationary and signed by the school librarian, is sent to the person or family being honored.

This committee works closely with the Library Media Specialists, the school newsletter editors, book vendors and the council treasurer to ensure the success of this ongoing program.

Class Parent Committees
–  Julie Gorecki, Chair

The purpose of the Class Parent Committee is to work with students, their faculty advisors, and school administrators on social events, community service projects and fundraising throughout the students’ four years at SHS.  The committee becomes more active in the student’s junior and senior years.  Some examples of senior events the committee will provide are a back to school barbeque, yearbook day picnic, class trip, graduation reception and a reunion breakfast in the fall following graduation.  The committee works side by side with the students and their advisors, listening to their ideas so that these events build class spirit, in addition to being fun. Parent involvement is the key to making the committee successful, from paying the annual class dues to volunteering time.

We have formed these committees and are looking for volunteers to help with the various events.  Anyone interested, please call the following committee chairs:
Class of 2011 - Linda Morgante & Carol Cirieco
Class of 2012 - Angela Welsh
Class of 2013 - Lynn Carlisto
Class of 2014 - Michelle DiPaolo

We are excited about making a difference in your student's years at SHS.  We hope you will support our efforts.  We would like to thank all the parents who have already sent in their class dues.  If not, please send them to:
SHS PTSA Class Parent Committee, Class of ____,

Driver Safety

This committee was formed to encourage and support our teens while teaching them to be careful and responsible drivers. We sponsor an annual driver safety program for tenth grade students to provide the students and their parents with the tools they need to produce safe and responsible drivers.  Watch our Web site for dates of the program. The committee is looking for speakers for future programs. If you know of a speaker, please contact Michelle DiPaolo at 962-5363 or Michelljd929@aol.com

Education Committee
–
Michele Lombardo & Darilyn Pietrangolare, Co-Chairs

The Somers High School PTSA Education Committee Mission:  Strengthening the connection between families and schools is so important, according to Richard W. Riley, the U.S. Secretary of Education, that it has become one of America’s National Education Goals.  In line with this national effort, the Somers High School PTSA Education Committee will encourage communication among students, parents, teachers and administrators toward increasing success in our educational programs to ensure the academic, social and emotional growth of our children.  The committee will gather information and listen to ideas from high school educators, parents and students, within our district as well as across the state and nation, who share the goal of forging a cooperative relationship.  It will also promote the importance of considering all points of view, of recognizing different interests, and of being sensitive to the ever increasing challenges facing today’s schools and families.

The 2010-11 meeting schedule for the Somers High School Committee is as follows:

Tuesday, October 5, 2010
Tuesday, November 9, 2010
Tuesday, December 7, 2010
Tuesday, January 11, 2011
Tuesday, February 8, 2011
Tuesday, March 8, 2011
Tuesday, April 12, 2011
Tuesday, May 10, 2011

Meetings are scheduled for 2:15 in the H.S. Library conference room.

Please feel free to attend just one or all of the meetings. We welcome all students, parents, faculty and administrators.  Please contact Education Co-Chairs, Judi Callan (judicallan@aol.com) or Michele Troetti (914-232-7181 or micheletroetti@gmail.com) if you would like further information regarding the Somers High School Education Committee.

Please support your PTSA by becoming a member.

Red Ribbon Week is a National anti-substance abuse campaign which is celebrated by over 1,000 school districts and communities throughout the U.S.  The Red Ribbon symbolizes a commitment to a healthy and drug free lifestyle.  This high school committee works closely with the Student Assistance Counselor and the SADD club to develop and to help administer a program which will make our children stop and think twice about making unhealthy choices. This committee also works closely with the Districtwide RRW Committee to help coordinate a unified community-wide approach to substance abuse.

Reflections
–  Laura Sweig

Reflections was developed by the the National PTA and is a program that encourages children, parents, teachers, and the community to have an awareness of the arts. This program has enabled students to enjoy the benefits of having their creative talents recognized and their self esteem developed. Every year, a theme is chosen and this year's theme is "I Wonder Why...".  All grade levels (K - 12) are encouraged to participate in one of four ways: musical composition, literature (including poetry, prose, and drama), visual arts (including drawing, painting, collage, and printmaking), and photography. The work will be judged for competition, and the program culminates with national recognition and awards. And although the program has a contest format, the ultimate goal is participation!

Scholarship
–  Edith Rivera

Each year the PTSA awards five $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors who plan to continue their studies.  The scholarship committee coordinates fundraising activities and helps to distribute scholarship information and applications to SHS seniors.  Some members of this committee may also sit on the scholarship selection committee, a separate body made up of parent and teacher representatives.  (Senior parents are welcomed to the scholarship committee, but may not join the selection committee.)
